Tax & Duties
What You May Be Charged on Arrival
MythCove ships internationally from Hong Kong. Prices on this site are in US dollars and do not include your country’s import taxes, unless your checkout total explicitly shows them as collected. This page explains who charges what, and why.
Duty, VAT, GST — Which Is Which?
- Customs duty is a tariff on goods entering a country. Whether it applies depends on what the item is and what it cost.
- VAT / GST / sales tax is a consumption tax your country charges on imported goods, usually calculated on the value of the goods plus shipping.
- Carrier handling or brokerage fee is charged by the courier or postal service for clearing the parcel through customs on your behalf. It is their fee, not a government tax, and it is not something we receive.
All three are set by your government and your carrier. MythCove has no control over the amounts and receives none of the money.
Who Pays
Unless your order total at checkout stated that import charges were included, you are the importer of record and any charges are yours to pay. The carrier will normally contact you by SMS, email or a card through the door before delivering, and will hold the parcel until the charges are settled.
If charges are collected at checkout
For some destinations we can collect estimated duty and tax at checkout so your parcel is delivered without further payment. Where this applies it is shown as a separate line in your order total before you pay. If you were charged at checkout and the carrier still asks you for money, send us the notice — do not pay it twice.
De Minimis — The Value Below Which Nothing Is Charged
Most countries set a threshold below which small parcels enter free of duty, and sometimes free of tax. Below it, nothing is charged; above it, the whole value is usually assessed. These thresholds change, sometimes at short notice, and differ for duty and for VAT. Your national customs website is the only reliable source for the figure that applies to you on the day your parcel lands.
How We Declare Parcels
Every MythCove parcel is declared honestly: the real contents, and the real price paid. We cannot and will not mark an order as a gift, declare a lower value, or describe the goods as something else. Under-declaring is illegal in most destinations and puts your parcel at risk of seizure and you at risk of a penalty.
Refused or Unclaimed Parcels
If you decline to pay import charges, the parcel is either destroyed or returned to us, depending on the carrier and the country. If it comes back to us we will refund the cost of the goods, less the original shipping and any return or handling charges the carrier passes on. Parcels destroyed or abandoned by customs cannot be refunded.
Import charges are not a reason we can refund on their own — they are a cost of importing, in the same way postage is.
Hong Kong Sales Tax
Hong Kong does not levy VAT, GST or sales tax, so no local consumption tax is added to your order at our end. Everything you may be charged is charged by your own country.
Business Buyers
If you are importing for resale and need a commercial invoice, an HS code breakdown or your VAT/EORI number on the paperwork, tell us before the order ships. Write to support@mythcove.com. Documents cannot be reissued once a parcel has been cleared.
Questions
We cannot tell you what your country will charge — only your customs authority can. But if a notice you have received is confusing, or the amount looks wrong, send it to support@mythcove.com and we will help you read it.
